FLOOT BIRD TREATS THE WORLD AS A COLLABORATOR
In a time when music is quietly renegotiating its relationship with the human hand, Floot Bird arrives as a reminder of how deeply physical sound can be. Australian bassist–producer Paddy Fitzgerald builds his third studio-album not around digital perfection, but around breath, texture and the unpredictable rhythms of the natural world. It’s a record that listens closely to the environment, and then reshapes it into something personal and unusually alive.

At the core of Floot Bird is the haunting voice of the superb lyrebird, recorded in the forests where Fitzgerald grew up. Known for its mimicry and harmonically rich calls, the bird became the unlikely anchor for the album’s rhythmic identity. By slowing down these field recordings, (captured by his father, an avid natural sound archivist), Fitzgerald uncovered hidden polyrhythms and claves that became the structural basis of multiple pieces. The title nods to this phenomenon: the uncanny way these calls echo the phrasing of a flutist practicing alone in the wild.
