Through her music, Kika Sprangers invites us on a journey of exploration, delving into the depths of human existence. Inspired by infinity, a concept both awe-inspiring and intimidating, Kika's new Large Ensemble program, "(In)finity," is set to be released on November 15, 2024, by Dox Records.
Kika’s career has been marked by notable achievements. As the Young VIP of 2018, Kika performed at venues such as the BIMhuis and the North Sea Jazz Festival. Since then, she has firmly established herself on both the national and international jazz stages. De Volkskrant lauded her fourth album, Mind’s Eye, as remarkable, underscoring her emergence as a distinguished and influential figure in the world of jazz. As a composer for large ensembles, Kika won the Rogier van Otterloo Award in 2021 and contributed to programs like the Jong Metropole and Pynarello’s Freedom and Victory, the latter earning De Ovatie from Dutch concert halls.
Sprangers has always possessed a keen awareness and a strong conceptual vision, unafraid to push beyond the boundaries of sound. Her artistic journey has been deeply rooted in exploring what it means to be human. This was vividly captured in her debut album, Human Traits (2019), where together with her Large Ensemble she wove a delicate fusion of portrait photography and music.
Her compositions with the Large Ensemble are built upon the essence of this intimate style. The result is an intriguing blend of vocals, saxophone, bass clarinet, flute, trumpet, and horn, which, despite its grandeur, offers the musicians the freedom to fully immerse themselves in their improvisations. As with her debut album, "(In)finity" will be enhanced by a visual component. A light installation designed by Sander Hagelaar will interact with the ensemble's music, creating a symbiotic interplay between music and light that expresses themes such as transience and the human perception of time.
This fluidity in this performance mirrors the essence of infinity itself—an overwhelming concept that can evoke both feelings of freedom and fear. As we age, our perception of infinity evolves, shifting from the innocent wonder of a child gazing at the stars to the profound philosophical inquiries of adulthood. Yet, the question remains: What is infinity, truly? Kika wholeheartedly expresses this through vulnerability and strength—a vision that manifests musically in a passion for unorthodox arrangements, captivating tension arcs from symphonic whirlwinds to poignant silences—jazz poetry that draws you in.
